Boosting new Approaches for flexibility Management By Optimizing process Off-gas and waste use
The H2020 Project BAMBOO is dedicated to the development of new technologies for energy- and resource-intensive industries such as steel production, petrochemicals, minerals processing, and pulp and paper production. These technologies can be assigned to three main pillars of innovation: Waste heat recovery, flexibility of power consumption and recycling and utilization of waste streams. These are industrial heat pumps, Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems, combustion monitoring and control devices, improved burners and hybrid processes that flexibly utilize various energy sources such as waste heat, steam and electricity. These technologies will be developed within BAMBOO specifically for the needs of industry and then demonstrated in real industrial environments.
These activities will be supported by quantitative life cycle assessments and a decision support tool for flexibility management. This tool processes and analyzes the essential process parameters of the BAMBOO technologies as well as information on the energy market with the aim to reduce the consumption of energy and raw materials.
The BAMBOO consortium is characterized by a strong industrial participation; six large companies as end users and three SMEs as technology providers, working with experienced RTOs.
Within the BAMBOO framework, AIT is developing a heat pump steam generator that makes waste heat usable in the form of saturated steam at up to 150°C. Heat pumps that supply steam are of particular interest to industry, as steam generation accounts for a significant proportion of the required process heat. If heat pumps are used for low-pressure steam generation instead of steam generators using fossil fuels, significant savings in primary energy and CO2 emissions are achieved.
