Green and Quiet Aviation Technologies

Civil aviation is a substantial source of emissions, accounting today for 3% of all the European human-induced Greenhouse Gases and for 12% of the transport related emissions, with approximately 628 million tons of CO2 per year. Air travel is a fast increasing mode of transport, growing, in spite of the economic downturn, at a rate of 5% per year in the last 20 years, with peaks of 10% per year in India and China. The EU has set four ambitious targets to be reached in aviation in the next decades: (i) reducing by 50% of CO2 emission through reduction of the fuel consumption, (ii) reducing by 80% the NOx emission, (iii) reducing by 50% the perceived external noise, and (iv)developing a comprehensive LCA for green aircrafts. AIT Austrian Institute of Technology as full member of the EREA platform, is undertaking these challenges by proposing new solutions and developing technologies in the areas of:

  • Hybrid and electric powertrain for Small Air Transport (SAT);
  • Big data for assessing environmental noise of air transport;
  • Next generation open rotor propulsion for future aviation;
  • Innovative thermal and de-icing solutions for more electric aircraft;
