Design of Light Weight Structures
Environmentally-friendly vehicles, in particular hybrid and electric cars, are poised to play a major role on the roads of tomorrow. In order to achieve maximum efficiency, their weight must be kept to a minimum. The AIT is developing new techniques for designing lightweight and safe vehicles made of aluminium and magnesium alloys. The focus is on space frames, a structure of extruded aluminium profiles and cast nodes, for which the tooling costs are lower compared with the conventional shell construction.
The Mobility Department strives to meet the demands of environmentally-friendly and safe mobility in the areas of lightweight construction and crash safety. New impetus is provided by materials sciences, lightweight construction technologies and technical product development. Given that the goals of lightweight construction are subject to a technical and societal dynamic, the AIT is relentlessly developing innovative, sustainable solution concepts and methods.
- Conceptual design of multi-material constructions
- Representation of integral and differential lightweight constructions
- Implementation of customer-specific requirements
- Realisation of material and constructive lightweight construction
