Biomining and Smart Screening

Microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) contain a multitude of as yet unknown genes with novel functions. Since most naturally occurring bacteria and many fungi cannot be grown on conventional laboratory media, we use the approach of metagenomics to gain access to the genetic resources and diverse metabolic capacities of these microorganisms. We develop clone libraries of bacteria and fungi from different habitats and screen them for new industrial enzymes, biotechnologically relevant functions and pharmaceutically valuable bioactive substances. New enzymatic functions and substances are discovered using molecular genetic tools to modify and thus enhance the known activity pattern of the microbes. Our comprehensive collection of microorganisms from different habitats opens up the possibility of testing the physiological functions of these microorganisms for their suitability for industrial use.
We offer extensive smart screening expertise and infrastructure:
- Modification of molecular switches and use of epigenetic modifiers to enhance
the metabolite and enzyme range of microorganisms - Wide range of screening methods for enzymes, metabolites, antibiotics and
other bioactive substances Seamless screening platform – from cultivation and
activity tests through to chemical structure determination (in close cooperation
with universities)
Reference projects:
- ToxiGenome
- Plant Signaling and Phytoplasma Response
