Management of complexity

Because of the globalization of innovation and the growing internationalization of interdependencies, more and more organizations are confronted with unexpected interdependencies on a daily basis. As a result, new skills in dealing with uncertainty and unpredictability are required. The pressure for change within organizations has resulted in the evaluation of well-established control and governance mechanisms. Although linear thinking usually leads to quick and easy solutions, detrimental effects for the shareholders are often entailed and cause follow-up costs on the economic, social and ecologic level. Thus, it is the view on the overall system (e.g. the industry, the region, the nation), which may help to understand and manage the complexity of one’s own organization. New concepts such as open innovation, systematic innovation, and Stage-Gate model are applied to meet the needs.
