For applications based on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, AIT has developed a mobile security app which enables regular smartphones to conduct person identification tasks:

• Scans the machine readable zone (MRZ type 1,2 and 3) of a passport with the built-in camera and uses optical character recognition to transform the text into digital form for passport chip access.
• The built-in camera compares the face of a person against stored facial information for the passport and offers output similarity scores to support the officials.
• Captures 4 fingerprints simultaneously in a contactless manner using the built-in camera, and assesses the quality of the fingerprints for later comparison against a biometric passport or database (VISA Information System).
