AIT has more than 40 years' experience in the measurement and interpretation of stable isotopes of bioelements (C, N, S, O, H) and operates one of the most state-of-the-art isotope laboratories in Austria. Stable isotope measurements are used to investigate and explore biological, chemical and physical processes and mechanisms based on natural isotope fractionation or using stable isotope labelling.

AIT specialises in the application of stable isotopes in the environmental sciences with a focus on the behaviour of pollutants in the environment, hydrology, declaration of origin, nutrient and carbon cycling in soils and insects, and using stable isotopes to elucidate complex nutrient cycles in natural ecosystems.

  • Investigate the impact of external drivers on the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen and carbon in living systems using stable isotopes, e.g. gross mineralisation, nitrification and gaseous losses.
  • Trace the fate and turnover of specific isotope labelled compounds in the environment, e.g. fertiliser use efficiency or irrigation water use efficiency.
  • Measure the assimilation, routing and uptake rate of specific nutrients in insects or larger organisms.
  • Use of intrinsic isotope signatures of insects as markers for mark-recapture studies 
  • Determining the most probable origin of a sample based on multiple isotope and fatty acid analysis
