VASL – Visual Airborne Self Localization

Unmanned aerial vehicles have proved their worth in a number of applications and are increasingly integrated in civil airspace with the navigation system constituting a core component. Existing systems are based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) whose functioning can be heavily impaired or even prevented by a wide range of influences (atmospheric disturbances, jammers etc.).

As an alternative or supplement to GNSS, the VASL project is developing an optical navigation system comprising cameras and special algorithms designed to determine the exact position and attitude of aerial vehicles based on geographic information.
