Smart Grids

The increased use of renewable energy sources means that new players are being integrated into the electricity network.

The stochastic characteristic of generation by photovoltaics and wind can lead to voltage fluctuations in the electricity network. The department is developing intelligent control strategies for integrating an increasing amount of new, distributed generation into the existing network infrastructure while maintaining a high standard of power supply and network stability.

Using modelling and simulation techniques, our research teams are helping the industry to develop new electronic network components and analysing their interaction with the power grid.

The department is thereby laying the foundations for the smart grids of the future – intelligent electricity networks designed to ensure energy-efficient and cost-effective system operation.
